The need for a uniform law for marriage and divorce for all Israeli citizens, regardless of nationality and religion.
One of the fundamental rights of a citizen is the right to marry. In Israel, there is no uniform law for citizens of different faiths, which regulates the process of marriage and divorce. This situation leads to discrimination and many problems.
For example, if a man and a woman want to get married: the mother of the groom is Jewish and the father, for example, is French, and the father of the bride is Jewish and the mother is French - in such a case, they can only get married abroad or live in a known public framework.
If a dispute arises between a married man and woman through the rabbinate (custody of children, place of residence of the children, division of property, and other issues), the dispute may be resolved in a civil court or a religious court, and there is great importance to the question of who among the couple will submit the documents first.
It should be noted that the religious law and the civil law do not always overlap. For example, if a man refuses to give his wife a "get" - a religious divorce - the woman is not allowed to remarry.
Another significant problem is the marriage of Arab Israeli citizens with Arabs from the territories. This is also related to issues of state security, and we must also take into account this factor.
In our opinion, the right of a citizen to marry should be equal for all, regardless of religion or nationality.
Israel needs a uniform law for marriage and divorce that will ensure equal rights for all citizens.
